America the Shallow?

I logged on to MSNBC this morning to check the news headlines, and this is what I saw:

The article is all about the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan. It's an important article. Of course, if you are reading Newsweek anywhere else in the world, you will know the article is important because it is the cover story. In America, though, the cover story is about famed photographer Annie Leibovitz. (The pictures on the left side show the covers of the magazine as it appears across the world.)

Is it any reason that Americans are less informed than our worldwide peers? Our magazine editors realize that we are more likely to purchase a magazine if a celebrity photographer is on the cover than we are if there is some "boring old war."
